In the summer and fall of 2018, a community of Donimo’s friends helped fundraise for her to purchase a mobility aid that held huge hope for greater independence for her. The technology seemed amazing. The innovative design, like Donimo herself, was sleek, edgy and polished. It was a handsome vehicle. Shortly after the purchase, Donimo, Sarah and I ventured down to the Olympic Village seawall–on a bright October afternoon–for a celebration outing. On our way home, Donimo lead us through a back route where a vacant parking lot invited her to spin donuts and show-off her expert manoeuvres. I saw a different side of Donimo that day–a mischievous glint in her eye as she raced past us, playfully spanking Sarah. I’ve reflected on that day often in recent months.
