First impressions

December 2009. Hannukah was early that year. It was a tough period in my life and Sarah invited me to her and Donimo’s Hannukah party. This was the first time I met Donimo. I remember how appreciative I felt, welcomed into their home, and introduced to their close-knit community of friends.

My first impression of Donimo—which I shared with her only a few weeks ago—was interest and curiosity. She was handsome and intense. Creative and smart. She had definite opinions and refined tastes in everything from music to fashion, and from food to décor. I remember her being reserved with me. Cautious, even. I was unsure if that was her usual way or if it was specific to me. I never asked.

What I knew was that she was someone of depth. Ours was a friendship that grew slowly and significantly. Over the years we discovered some shared life experiences that deepened our connection. And over the past year, in particular, I witnessed her wisdom and insight, courage and openness in more intimate ways than I could have ever imagined. I was right about her depth. I’m missing you my friend. I’ll be watching for your visits.
